Can I do a keyboard repair myself?
Yes. It’s not that hard to replace keyboards on the majority of low- to mid-range laptop models. However, the job is finicky and requires a steady hand. You must be particularly careful not to sever the data cable connection joining the keyboard to the laptop screen. In most laptops, this connection is quite tight, and easy to break if you don’t know what you are doing.
Generally, the keyboard is released by unsnapping the trim at the top of the laptop (above the keyboard, below the screen). You may also need to unscrew some case elements. Without the right tools, some force my be required to unsnap the trim or lever off the top of the laptop case.
We recommend calling our keyboard repair
team if you’re not confident taking the front off your machine or unscrewing and removing internal elements yourself. If you do decide to carry out a laptop keyboard replacement
by yourself, make sure you switch off the power and remove the battery before doing any work inside the computer.
Please note: the more expensive and well-built your laptop is, the harder it will be to get inside the case without damaging the machine. We recommend leaving high-end laptop keyboard replacement
to our qualified engineers.
